This report reviews South Africa’s experience with the destruction of surplus state-owned small arms. The report starts with an overview of South Africa’s security and defense policies, including the country's role in the African continent regarding small arms control efforts. The authors then present three case studies of weapons destruction programs run by South Africa and evaluate them in an effort to gauge the success of their implementation and impact they have on weapons proliferation in South and Southern Africa. The report ends with lessons learned from weapons destruction programs in South Africa and Lesotho.
