This paper looks at the eurozone's approach to banking supervision. A European Banking Authority (EBA) was created, but it only has very limited powers over the national supervisors whose daily work remains guided by national considerations. The author argues that developments have shown that this ‘national problem and hence national responsibility for cleaning up’ approach is not tenable. The problems might arise at the national level, but they quickly threaten the stability of the entire system.
