This report presents analysis of the distribution of income and income mobility in the United States over time and in comparison with other advanced economies. According to the author measures of the distribution of income across US households show a distribution that is relatively unequal compared to other developed countries and a distribution that has become more so in recent decades as high-income households benefitted disproportionately from economic growth. It also appears that going from rags to riches is relatively rare; that is, where one starts in the income distribution greatly influences where one ends up.
