This paper explores the US government approach and involvement in the war in Afghanistan. The author contends that the broad strategic issues at stake for the US government are domestic and regional national security interests, an appropriate definition of the conditions of the US involvement and the projected approach of the administrations. Moreover, the author highlights the importance of balancing the overall effort, given its likely timeline, risks, and costs, with other US priorities.
