This report analyzes the North Korean transfer of power and concludes that, as of July 2012, the nuclear state appears stable, and that its regime shows no interest in changing policy direction. It asserts that Kim Jong-un's firm grip on power may spell more hardship for his people and more tension in the region. Maintaining existing defense and regional policies, which also appears to be part of his game plan, would mean continued confrontation with North Korea's neighbors and increasing risks of nuclear proliferation.
