The author of this paper argues that Myanmar’s recent political reforms are designed to ensure the continuation of military power in the country. They are also designed to broaden engagement with foreign governments and companies after years of political isolation. The hoped-for results are the lifting of lingering sanctions and the diversification of both business opportunities and aid.
