This insight discusses the potential development of a second military force in Egypt. It argues that this force could serve as a counterweight and to decrease the likelihood of a military coup. This strategy would weaken the Egyptian army and consequently, Egypt would represent a smaller military threat to Israel. This in turn would reduce the chances of a future regional war. However, countries with weaker armies are arguably likely to compensate for this weakness by energizing their weapons of mass destruction programs, the authors argue.
