This brief analyzes the internal and external repercussions Egyptian president Muhammad Morsi's consolidation of Islamist hold over Egyptian government and governance following events of August 2012. It argues that under the Muslim Brothers, Egypt is making strides towards becoming a key player and perhaps leader of the Islamist-dominated new Middle East. As the domestic socioeconomic situation collapses, with little that anyone can do to reverse the slide, the author argues that Egypt will feel compelled to focus public attention on populist-jihadist external challenges to the detriment of long-term regional stability.
