Egypt’s modern history spanned, according to the authors of this policy brief, two types of regime. The first, the monarchy, began when Muhammad Ali assumed the reins of government in 1805. The second started on July 23, 1952, when a group of young army officers ousted King Farouk. In this brief the authors ask, on the eve of the second round of voting in June 2012, whether the presidential elections in Egypt represent the end of the country's military regime.
