Sometime later in 2012 or in the first half of 2013, Malaysians will go to the polls in the country’s thirteenth general election, which many see as a watershed event. It will test whether the world’s longest continuously elected political coalition, the National Front (Barisan Nasional), can maintain its hold on power or not. Whether the answer is ‘yes’ or ‘no’ will most likely depend on Malaysia’s ability to overcome a deeply entrenched history of identity politics.
