This commentary focuses on the political deadlock surrounding Cyprus. One possible way to break it is to pursue economically-based confidence building measures. Pursuing that option, however, would first require reshuffling and expanding the membership of the Turkish-Greek Economic Forum, which could then act as a catalyst to foster closer Turkish-Greek-Cypriot economic ties. And yet, for economic engagement to work as a deadlock-breaker, Ankara, Athens and Nicosia have to agree not to interfere with or obstruct the process. That should be a task, the commentary concludes, for those EU member states that support Turkey’s accession into the Union.
