Despite having been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, this commentary argues that the EU has historically played only a minor role as a successful mediator between third parties. For that to change, it needs to focus more on using its existing mediation support services when relevant and as part of a comprehensive approach to conflict prevention and resolution. Such an approach, unsurprisingly, needs to be done in full coordination with EU member states, global and regional organizations, and national, local and civil society actors.
