This paper examines the legal and institutional framework of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA). Since its inception, the African Union (AU) has engaged with several crisis situations on the continent. The paper seeks to assess some of the future institutional and mandate constraints that APSA may deal with as it continues to provide a framework for engaging in conflict situations in Africa. It attempts to do this through an in-depth examination of the implementation as well as the operationalization of certain African peacekeeping and peace-building missions.
