This policy brief writes in reaction to a report concerning agreement between Iran and the US to engage in direct talks regarding the Iranian nuclear program. It contends that direct negotiations between Iran and the US are not necessarily a negative development and in fact embody opportunities for Israel, whether or not the talks are ultimately declared a success. Iran's willingness to talk would indicate two noteworthy trends: the effectiveness of the sanctions, and the removal of Russia and China from the negotiations. After describing two further positive and one potentially problematic outcome of the negotiations, the article closes by reinforcing the view that Israel should not oppose direct talks.
