This brief looks at some of the characteristics of contemporary organized violence. Many of the traditional tools to confront organized violence are short-term in nature and aim to stem violence or manage crises. This brief argues that while these tools are critical, in a globalized world they will often do no more than temporary damage control. In the long term, international action must have a more structural and integrated approach to addressing organized violence. They argue that effective interventions need to be integrated in nature, global in scope, and place more focus on reducing the structural conditions that enable the perpetuation of violence.
