The policy memo discusses the value of the US nuclear weapons stationed abroad. Referring to the results of a study on the motivations for placing weapons in allied countries, the author suggests that if historical trends are to be believed, foreign nuclear deployments may return to relevance in the foreseeable future. The motivation behind the continued stationing of nuclear weapons abroad is related to deterrence, global power projection and to the prevention of countries from building up their own nuclear arsenals. The most reliable predictors of nuclear deployments were shared alliances and common enemies.
