This brief discusses the disagreement between China and the US over ballistic missile defense (BMD) systems. Specifically, it examines the technical and political impacts of US BMD on China's nuclear deterrence regime and proposes two potential solutions. The first would be a low effectiveness BMD that can counter North Korean threats without undermining Sino-US strategic stability. The second solution would be to couple a high effectiveness BMD system with limited-size defense.
