The paper discusses the five Central Asian countries, 20 years after they achieved independence from the Soviet Union. It analyzes the economic, political and foreign policy developments the countries went through. It gives specific attention to the role of leaders, religion, ethnicity and national identity formation as well as to the external cooperation between the five republics and Russia and China.
