This report provides an overview of the debate surrounding internet governance. It discusses the role of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which oversees some of the critical technical underpinnings of the Internet, as well as the increasing stake that national governments have in ICANN policy decisions. In looking at the role of the US government in this subject, the author notes that looking forward, the institutional nature of Internet governance could have far reaching implications on important policy decisions that will likely shape the future evolution of the internet.
