On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty, this commentary acknowledges the fundamental contribution made by the Franco-German motor for Europe. However, the two countries must now abandon the pretence of performing an independent role at the global scale and accept the inevitable: it is the European institutions that represent Europe as a whole on the global scene.
