This paper focuses on the implications of the Arab Spring for the security of states and individuals in Europe and North America. It first discusses the potential challenges emanating from the foreign policies of Arab governments as they respond to the protests and the processes of political change in their countries. It then discusses challenges emanating from the continued or increasing weakness of the Arab states themselves. It argues that diverging interests and concerns between the ‘West’ and the new Arab governments are manageable if not based on preconceived notions.
