In this report the authors examine the incidence of wartime sexual violence in numerous conflicts past and present. Important findings include: wartime rape is not ubiquitous, many armed groups successfully dissuade their members from indulging in sexual violence; state forces are more likely to be reported as perpetrators of sexual violence than rebels; levels of sexual violence vary widely between armed groups engaged in the same conflict.
