This paper examines how Australia can reduce future losses from natural disasters and most effectively aid victims in recovery. It argues that insurance should play a key role in supporting any effort to maximize national disaster resilience. To this end, it recommends the establishment of a regular dialogue between the insurance sector and the state as well as comprehensive landscape assessments to ensure insurance premiums are based on risk.
