This report explores the relationship between Australia’s national security and its development assistance program. The Australian Government is committed to increasing its aid program until it reaches 0.5% of gross national income by 2015–16, turning AusAID into one of the biggest spending government agencies. The report considers the impact of the large increase in development assistance on national security and provides policy recommendations for official aid planners and national security decision-makers on how best to leverage aid to advance Australia’s security interests.
