This paper examines the evolution of organized crime in Africa. The authors argue that organized crime is inextricably linked to the development and changing nature of the African state itself and that it has been facilitated by the increasing connections between Africa and the global economy. It is precisely as states transition towards a more sustainable state-building path that they are most vulnerable to infiltration by organized crime groups.
