This issue analyzes social and political issues facing African states, with a focus on peace, conflict and democracy. Topics covered include the evolving mediation capacity of the Southern African Development Community (SADC); issues of political deadlock in Libya and Syria; the inadequacy of the use of force theory in Nigeria's security architecture; and the role of customary institutions and traditions in pastoralist societies in the Horn of Africa. Ways of measuring reconciliation in Rwanda, affirmative action in Ghana, and Livestock Patrol Units in South Sudan are also discussed.
