This report examines the economic evidence surrounding the "hollowing out" thesis in the US manufacturing sector. Recent data, it states, suggests that manufacturing is "hollowing out" as US manufacturers undertake more high-value work abroad. According to the author, economic data have been slow to take note of this development which raises the question of whether the US will continue to generate highly skilled, high-wage jobs related to advanced manufacturing. The report concludes by considering the policy implications of this debate.
