This brief examines the initiatives taken to reduce emissions in the automotive sector in Japan, the US and the EU. While regulators in these countries have made considerable progress in improving energy efficiency, the author stresses the problems stemming from a globally fragmented approach. Ineffective and inefficient outcomes could be avoided by coordinating and harmonizing industry standards. Such efforts could expand markets, drive down costs, and promote the deployment of more energy efficient technologies.
