The 2011 tsunami in Japan resulted in a complex crisis situation, with particular implications for public communication. This paper analyzes the effectiveness of the state's communication strategies and notes some of its key failures. The authors also examine the role of new communication technologies and social media. In recognition of these new communication platforms, they conclude that government authorities need to adapt their communication strategies in crisis scenarios.
