Crisis management has become a challenging task due to the complex nature of emergencies which involve multiple actors coordinating a response in a time-limited manner. In particular, the advent of new media has allowed more information in a disaster situation to be accessed and produced by the general public. The data published on social networking platforms has been used to produce 'crisis maps' detailing specific disaster information in real time. The authors use a theoretical approach in order to better understand how crisis mapping processes operate. In concluding, the paper provides a summary of policy implications for Switzerland.
