This brief examines Israel's apology for operational errors during the takeover of the Mavi Marmara in May 2010. It suggests that the errors and the deteriorating situation in Syria have led to a thaw in Israeli-Turkish relations. However, greater engagement between the two countries is now possible. The author argues that this is good for Israel since Turkey is an important economic and political power. Nonetheless, distrust remains on both sides and it is unlikely that the relationship will return to the heights that it experienced during the 1990s.
