This is a transcript of a talk given by Robert E Rubin, Co-Chairman, Council on Foreign Relations at Chatham House on the effectiveness of democratic governance in addressing key economic challenges, specifically in the Euro-Atlantic region. Rubin argues that growth, economic security, and increased incomes with reduced inequality, are essential to the long-term viability of any economy. However, governments on both sides of the Atlantic are struggling to devise appropriate policy responses that could ensure sustained economic growth. He concludes that sound economic policies can only be implemented if democracies have effective political structures.
