This paper argues that China’s profile among the Pacific Islands has grown. This has increased American interest in the region and therefore could lead to competition between the two powers over the islands. However, the author argues that characterizing China's activities in a geo-strategic paradigm is inappropriate, even counter-productive. She suggests the US and Australia should cooperate with China in areas that support Pacific Island priorities rather than build new security arrangements designed to compete with it.
