This report examines the rise of China’s auto and auto parts industries and the government policies used to promote them. It also looks at trends in US-China trade in the automotive industry, related trade disputes, and implications for US-China commercial relations. It suggests that China's emerging motor vehicle market and its investment in US parts makers could provide opportunities for the US. However, the state and municipal ownership of many Chinese auto and auto parts companies may also cause friction.
