This policy brief considers what Hassan Rowhani’s recent election as the President of Iran (June 2013) might mean for the country's foreign policy. Although the brief's author expects the policy to moderate and feature a greater willingness to compromise, particularly in the case of the Iranian nuclear program, he also sees challenges ahead. In particular, a thawing of diplomatic relations between Tehran and the West could weaken international resolve to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions.
