This report traces the emerging and increasingly prevalent use of social media and online services as information channels during disasters and crises. It examines the ways in which government bodies can harness the opportunities to use social media in crisis communication efforts and details some of the risks that accompany it. The authors argue that many of these challenges are not insurmountable and that eventually authorities will have to adapt to such technologies if they wish to maintain communication with their audiences.
