This brief looks at the struggle over influence and power in Syria. The author argues that the United States and Russia are the principal players; resorting alternately to pressure, threats, and attempts at dialogue. Although the conflict between Russia and the West has increased as part of an ongoing global confrontation, the author indicates a gradual change in Russia’s standing as it becomes an increasingly important player on the international arena.
