This brief analyzes Israel's decision to allocate 60 percent of the country’s total known natural gas reserves for local consumption. The author points out that the decision was highly debated in public as the Israeli government's decision deviated from the recommendations of the inter-ministerial Tzemach Committee to export about half of the reserves. He also points out that it is difficult to understand the logic behind the government’s decision as Israel has never faced a crisis concerning its energy needs.
