Qatar’s Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani recently announced that he would be abdicating his thrown to his son. This brief explores why he decided to do this, what impact it might have on the kingdom’s foreign policy, and what downstream effect it might have on other Gulf monarchies.
