This paper discusses how non-Western values are not sufficiently appreciated or respected in the Western world. The author argues that it would be prudent for Western governments to stop trying to advise non-Westerners on issues of governance. With this in mind, the US should shift its energies to supporting a looser but bolder principle: the separation of governance and politics. In addition, the author examines a second 21st century separation worth contemplating: how to split menace from status, especially since this combination represents the most dangerous shortcut to power there is.
