This commentary explains the events surrounding President Morsi’s forced removal from office in 2013. In doing so, it identifies the role the Muslim Brotherhood’s political and economic reform agenda played in generating widespread opposition to Morsi’s rule. As Egypt considers how it should proceed, its ability to create an inclusive political system will be crucial. The paper concludes by outlining the key factors and actors which will determine whether Cairo can heal its fractured political landscape.
