This paper analyzes the effect of small to medium sized business (SMEs) investments in Colombia by private equity funds on local development. It also looks at how such effects can be influenced by development finance institutions. The paper concludes that development investors have a clear mandate to boost business activity through financial intermediaries. However, it argues that only in some cases do they pursue positive effects for the development of the country where they operate.
