This report outlines how the United States and its allies in the Asia-Pacific region have responded to the North Korean missile threat through the deployment of Ballistic Missiles Defenses (BMD) and increased BMD cooperation. The stated focus of US BMD policy, the authors argue, is to defend against limited missile strikes from rogue states, not to alter the balance of strategic nuclear deterrence between nuclear-armed states. Despite this, US BMD deployments have drawn criticisms from Russia and China, who regard them as a danger to strategic stability.
