This brief examines whether a possible US intervention in Syria in response to the use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime would be legitimate according to international law. In particular, it examines whether the use of force in this situation could be legitimized by the UN Charter, the doctrine of humanitarian intevention, or the unlawful use of chemical weapons itself.
