This brief examines Syria's agreement to allow the destruction of its chemical weapons to avoid a military strike by the United States. The authors provide an account of what led to the agreement, give an overview of what it requires of Syria, and talk about the challenges facing the implementation of the plan. They argue that this political solution to the chemical weapons issue in Syria is not without its difficulties, but that it presents a golden opportunity to eliminate one of the largest stores of chemical weapons in the world.
