This report examines Kazakhstan’s prospects for stability in a post-Nazarbayev era. Some of the variables considered include the country's economic development, Nazarbayev's succession plans, and the growing dissent, internal threats and national instability within the country. Given the likely interplay of these factors, the report concludes that without a strong and skilled leader following in the current president’s wake, Kazakhstan will face a period of stagnation and ideological upheaval.
