This brief examines Israel's response to the Russian and American proposal to disarm Syria's chemical weapons. The author explains that Israel fears that the US and Russia will attempt to disarm the entire Middle East, forcing Israel to also decommission its nuclear weapons. He therefore argues that it is in Israel's best interests to aid in setting the parameters for shaping the agenda on regional security and arms control, rather than to be dragged into a defensive position by continued opposition.
