This brief looks at the challenges facing the Geneva 2 negotiations on the conflict in Syria scheduled to take place in late November 2013. The challenges include finding a common denominator between the parties; the self-perceived strength of the Syrian regime; the opposition's distrust of the Assad regime; and the need for a united international community. The author concludes that the prognosis for the negotiations is not good.
