This paper examines whether Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti can help the country recover from its national debt crisis. The authors argue that, although Monti has already made major adjustments to the economy, they are not enough to be labelled a long-term success. They conclude that Italy's history and ongoing distrust of its politicians has created a deep faith in European integration as the broader solution to the problems that their politicians are liable to create for themselves.
