This paper discusses the implications of exploring and developing South Africa’s shale gas reserves through the use of emerging energy technologies, including hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling. The authors argue that the country's decision to use such technology will require an evaluation of the trade-offs between economic growth and environmental protection. Through the examination of a number of scenarios, they suggest that it is possible that fracking could be part of a greener future in South Africa, but that for this to occur, the country must make difficult decisions over water resources, taxation, and investment.
